Communication Studies
A.A. Degree
De Anza’s A.A. degree in Communication Studies provides
a foundational understanding of the discipline and a breadth of coursework that can transfer toward a bachelor's degree
in Communication Studies. Students develop knowledge
and skills in expressing ideas verbally and non-verbally;
learn to interpret, advocate and critically debate ideas; work productively in teams and groups; examine the role of culture in communication; and demonstrate the communication skills necessary to engage in personal, professional, civic and social relationships.
In addition to core coursework, students are required to declare a specialty area that allows them to make interdisciplinary connections and explore speci c areas of interest. Contact
a full-time Communication Studies instructor to create a specialty area of study (minimum 12 units) at least two quarters prior to completing your course of study. Your specialty area description with signed approval from the Communication Studies Department must accompany your application for the A.A. degree.

Associate in Arts in
Communication Studies for Transfer
A.A.-T. Degree
The Communication Studies major consists of courses appropriate for an Associate in Arts in Communication
Studies for Transfer degree, which provides a foundational understanding of the discipline, a breadth of coursework in the discipline and preparation for transfer to any CSU that accepts the Transfer Model Curriculum (TMC). The Associate in Arts in Communication Studies for Transfer is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies at a CSU campus. Students completing this degree
are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. Students transferring to a CSU campus that does accept this degree will be required to complete no more than 60 (semester) units after transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree. This degree may not be the best option
for students intending to transfer to a particular CSU campus
or to a university or college that is not part of the CSU system. In all cases, students should consult with a counselor for more information on university admission and transfer requirements.
