Persuasive Speech Assignment and Audience Analysis Questionnaire (AAQ)

Upload Outline and AAQ summary to Turnitin on Canvas

Prepare a persuasive speech from 6-to-7 minutes on a challenging or controversial topic. Prepare an audience analysis questionnaire (AAQ) to determine the target audience. Does the audience support or oppose your proposition (fact, value, and policy)?

No visual aids (PowerPoint or Screen Share) are permitted for this assignment.

Follow one of the organizational formats: the problem-solution, problem-cause-solution, or Monroe’s Motivated Sequence.

Verbally cite two sources in the speech, incorporate those sources in the body of the outline, and list those sources in the reference section of the preparation outline.

Plan to use 4x6 note cards and speak extemporaneously.

Assignment Review:

On a designated day by the instructor, students should bring to class sufficient copies (number to be provided) of the AAQ consisting of ten questions with a combination of yes/no (fixed alternative), scale, and open ended questions (see examples questions below). Does the group support or oppose the persuasive speech proposition (fact, value, policy)? Following that process, analyze student feedback, create a one-page summary of the results, and refer to the results during the persuasive speech.

Review Chapter 5, Audience Analysis, and Chapter 16, Persuasive Speaking. Review the instructor video for the Persuasive Speech Assignment and the Audience Analysis Questionnaire (AAQ).

On the day of the persuasive speech:

Submit a full-preparation outline and a one-page AAQ summary to Turnitin on Canvas before the assigned speaking day and bring a physical copy of the outline and summary to class for submission to the instructor before speech delivery.
